The Mental Health and Recovery Services Board (MHRSB) oversees and funds agencies in Stark County that provide mental health and substance abuse prevention, intervention and treatment. The Board is responsible for assessing the needs of the community and ensuring that a continuum of care is in place. This safety net provides services to people who could not otherwise access them due to a lack of resources.
The MHRSB currently works with the following

KidSummit provide after school prevention activities including
Sunshine Band, Father’s Day March, and special events. The
organization targets inner-city children and youth. There are rewarding
opportunities for volunteers.
Canton Friendship Center

The Center offers a welcoming environment to meet with friends and
to relax. Activities are planned and occur both inside and outside
of the agency. A food pantry and hot meals are also continual events.
The Friendship Center also houses the Canton Center Payee Program,
which provides money management services. Payee program representatives
work closely with the client and other involved parties to create
a budget which provides for living expenses as well as savings.

Provides comprehensive mental health services to children of Stark
County and their families. Services: Individual, group and family
therapy and parent counseling; psychological testing; parent education
groups; psychiatric evaluations; case management; intensive home-based
services; school-based services; transitional services, public education,

families, and businesses. In Canton, Coleman services are focused on a “recovery
model” where adults and families will receive psychiatric services,

This organization provides person-centered crisis intervention and
stabilization, Substance Abuse Mental Illness (SAMI) services, and
system assessment and linkage and responds to developing community
mental health and alchohol and other drugs (AoD) needs by providing
essential services in the community.
Other special programs include:
- Assertive Community Treatment (ACT
team), an intensive case management team focused on skill
building and symptom management;
- Free Space, a group for women who are victims
of domestic violence;
- Survivors, a self-help group for those who
have lost someone to suicide;
- Open Door, a support group for anyone
whose life has been touched by AIDS;
- Crisis Stabilization Unit,
a 12-bed unit to treat psychiatric issues;
- Detox Unit, a six-bed
unit to treat chemical dependency;
- RUOK, a program that calls senior
citizens daily to check on their well-being;
- Multi-systemic Therapy
(MST), a program for court-ordered youth involved in
multiple Stark County systems with multiple needs;
- Substance Abuse Mental
Illness (SAMI team), is comprised of psychiatrists, nurses, counselors
and case managers who work with individuals with co-occurring
mental illness and substance abuse.

Foundations is a peer-run organization that promotes
mental health recovery through peer support, education, networking
and advocacy. The organization has a mental health library and volunteer
opportunities to earn bus passes and gas cards. Services include volunteer
bus rider mentor program, planned social and educational events and
support groups. Foundation’s Warm Line (330) 455-1234 provides
an empathetic ear. It is staffed by volunteers who are also
consumers. All calls are completely confidential.

in-hospital psychiatric care. Services include evaluations, intensive

a social and recreational program for members. Open to adults
of all races and creeds who have been affected by mental illness,
mental retardation, physical disabilities, developmental disabilities,
loneliness, etc. The guiding principles are that members should have
ownership of program; Make-A-Way provides a social outlet that
accepts people as they are so that members make friends and have
fun.

(L.I.F.E.) Program provides drug/alcohol and tobacco curriculum,

Quest provides alcohol and

Quest also offers a variety of AoD prevention programs designed to
increase the knowledge and skills of children, adolescents and young

with alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.

Trillium Family Solutions provides counseling, support and assistance to care
for people and strengthen families. Programs include
individual and family counseling, grief counseling, geriatric care
services, deaf community services, HIV / AIDS case management services,
and Ways to Work (loan program).
Outpatient services are offered for adolescents, adults and families
with substance abuse, mental health, and co-occurring substance abuse
and mental health problems.

Adult Mental Health Consumer Advocate Anyone who is experiencing psychiatric symptoms who feels they could
use a little help from someone who has “been there,” may
contact the Mental Health Consumer Advocate.
The Mental Health and
Recovery Services Board of Stark County provides funding for this
position. Because
of personal experience, the Mental Health Consumer Advocate has
learned how to weave through the often complex mental health system.
